Amore e Mona Lagia e Guido ed io

Possiam be ringraziare un Ser costui

Che n’ha partiti, sapete da cui?

Nol vo’ contrar per averlo in oblio.

Poi questi tre più non v’hanno disìo;

Ch’eran serventi di tal guisa in lui,

Che veramente più di lor non fui,

Immaginando ch’elli fosse Iddio.

Amor and Mona and Guido and I

Can give our thanks to one Sir So-and-so,

That drove away a person you may know.

I would forget his name to say good-bye;

And these three people bore it out of mind,

The same name they served so in each chore

That they, in all truth could have done no more

If they had thought him God Himself enshrined.

So thank Amor, who saw what was at hand

Before the rest, and that discreet woman

Who, on cue, her heart withdrew from elsewhere.

Now thank Guido, missing the whole affair,

And myself, for finding his peace again –

If he pleases me, it goes not unplanned.
